What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is a drug free non surgical approach to healing and wellness. Chiropractic care restores health and prevents injury by improving the structural integrity of the body, primarily the spine. You may think of a chiropractor as the structural engineer of the body, whereas a medical doctor may be thought of as the chemical engineer.
The musculoskeletal system is a system of levers (bones), pulleys and support lines (muscles and fascia), and shock absorbers (joints). Through use, overuse, and injury we develop joint and fascial restrictions, as well as muscle imbalances and compensations. This can be a result of or can cause a spinal segment (vertebra) to be in a fixed malposition (subluxation). This can cause nerves to be impinged, compressed, irritated or stretched which alters the impulses travelling down the nerves affecting not only spinal complaints but the entire body. For example, not only spine pain but shoulder/arm pain, headaches, or leg pain may also originate from the spine.
In Dr. Stanger's office he focuses on providing conservative manual therapies for the types of musculoskeletal conditions that can respond to releasing restrictions and retraining appropriate muscular balance. These therapies include manual spinal adjustments (traditional and non force techniques), various soft tissue techniques (remember muscles move bones, bones don't move muscles), therapeutic modalities such as electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, ice or heat, and specific exervise training for the individual patient's condition.
You may have heard chiropractic offices talk about a specific chiropractic philosophy which makes chiropractic unique from other medical services. While I may espouse to that philosophy, I don't believe that my patient's generally want to be given a new health care philosophy. The only philosophy I will try to leave you with is that of a healthy active lifestyle so you can do the things you want to do and live a happy life.
